On the morning of October 31th, 2019, at 3C Hall, headquarters Building 1B, Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh, Hanoi, the Institute for European Studies (IES) under Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) solemnly organized the scientific conference entitled “Vietnam – Europe relations and promoting strategic cooperation with some countries in the new international context” in order to assess and analyze the advantages and disadvantages; and to propose solutions and recommendations to promote comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Europe in general and some key countries in particular in the new international context.

The conference was attended by Assoc.Prof Nguyen An Ha, director of IES, Assoc.Prof Dang Minh Duc, deputy director of IES and researchers from departments and centers of IES. On the guests side, there were representatives of VASS (Institute of Chinese Studies, Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, Institute for Northeast Asian Studies, etc) together with representatives of Ministries such as the European Department – Ministry of Foreign Affairs; experts, lecturers from Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam Diplomatic Academy…

Delivering an opening speech at the conference, Assoc.Prof. Dang Minh Duc warmly welcomed the attendance of all delegates and guests; emphasizing the crucial role of Vietnam – Europe relations as well as reviewing the current situation and issues raised in Vietnam – Europe relations for the period 2010 – 2020 and the need to propose solutions and recommendations to promote Vietnam – Europe relations in the new international context.

The program was divided into two sessions. The first session entitled “New context and Vietnam – Europe relations” was chaired by Assoc.Prof. Dang Minh Duc. In this session, three reports were presented by Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Duy Loi - Institute for Northeast Asian Studies, PhD. Ha Hoang Hai – European Department – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Assoc. Prof. Bui Hong Hanh – Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The second session entitled “Promoting strategic cooperation with some European countries in the new context” was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Nguyen An Ha with four reports from Prof. Vu Duong Huan – Vietnam Diplomatic Academy, PhD. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha – Institute for European Studies, Assoc. Prof. Dang Hoang Linh and Nguyen Duc Phuc – Vietnam Diplomatic Academy and PhD. Hoa Huu Cuong – Institute for European Studies. Presentations in the two sessions were received many questions and frank discussions from the participants of the program.

Delivering a closing speech at the conference, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen An Ha, director of IES highly appreciated the results achieved after a highly specialized discussion between experts and delegates. The director emphasized that the conference was a forum for exchanging useful academic issues for researchers, policy-makers and regulators, and continued to open up new and deeper research directions, as well as bring opportunities for future research cooperation among scientists.
